As mentioned earlier, Ragozzino’s aircraft, the Spirit 2, is almost an exact match of Charles Lindbergh’s the Spirit of St. Louis. Like the latter, the Spirit 2 is custom-built, as Ragozzino told KFOR-TV that every piece of the airplane was handmade. It also comes with extra fuel tanks.

Even so, there are a few differences between the Spirit of St. Louis and the Spirit 2. To begin with, Ragozzino’s creation has several Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requirements. One has to operate it like they would a 1920’s Mack truck that lacks the power steering, not to mention that the Spirit 2’s pilot seat is just but a wicker chair that is extremely light.

Ragozzino’s dream is to complete the New York to Paris flight like the Spirit of St. Louis did. He revealed that he has worked together with his team for hours on end to make it happen. It has been challenging and more expensive than any of them had anticipated, but that has not demotivated them.

The Spirit 2’s first flight lasted about fifteen minutes. It was enough to let Ragozzino know which parts he needs to work on to make sure that the aircraft’s flight from New York to Paris will be a success.

The Martian aircraft wing is referred to as an airfoil and allows the plane to travel at a speed close to the speed of light in a thin Martian atmosphere.

The Perseverance mission launched a small helicopter for initial trials at flight in Mars. The ingenious design features a pair of rotors mounted vertically above each other sharing a single axis. The blades are much larger than you would observe here on Earth. The wings would also have to spin much faster to compensate for the low-density, frigid temperatures, and carbon dioxide concentrated atmosphere.

SU2 flow solver software being the most advanced aerodynamics equation solver in NASA was employed by the Perseverance team to study the behavior of fluid around different shapes. This was crucial in determining the perfect shape of an airfoil to fly around the equator of Mars.
